Germany has come under pressure from Turkey

National News
Germany has come under pressure from Turkey to investigate a building fire which killed nine Turkish immigrants and saw one woman throw her baby to safety from third-floor window. Ankara's call for an investigation came on Tuesday, amid reports that the fire in Ludwigshafen in southwestern Germany was started deliberately.

"We expect German authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation, taking into account every possibility, and to prosecute the perpetrators if the fire was started deliberately," the Turkish foreign ministry said.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, said the four adults and five children killed in the blaze, and 20 of the 60 people injured, were Turkish.

 Microsoft offers to buy Yahoo!

Entertainment NewsAs if having a huge monopoly in the PC operating system market wasn't enough, Microsoft now has its eyes on the search engine business, and has now put in an unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo! for $44.6 billion US.

The directors at Yahoo! are currently in talks about whether to accept the takeover bid or not, claiming that they will 'evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo!'s strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders.'

Microsoft's often over-enthusiastic CEO Steve Ballmer explained that 'We have great respect for Yahoo!, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market.'

Professor convicted of insulting Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

National NewsA political science professor was convicted Monday of insulting the revered founder of modern Turkey and given a 15-month suspended prison sentence, a news report said. Atilla Yayla, a professor at Gazi University in Ankara and head of the Association for Liberal Thinking, was convicted of insulting the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

It is a crime in Turkey to insult Ataturk, the man who founded secular, modern Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire and is still revered here nearly 70 years after his death. Yayla's conviction comes as Turkey, which aspires to join the European Union, faces criticism for failing to protect freedom of expression. Several prominent Turkish journalists and writers - including Nobel literature prize winner Orhan Pamuk - have been tried for insulting "Turkishness" and state institutions.
